Frequently Asked Questions

What are the HMRC mileage rates for 2025/26?
+
The HMRC Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) rates for 2025/26 are unchanged: Cars and vans 45p/mile for the first 10,000 business miles and 25p/mile above 10,000. Motorcycles 24p/mile. Bicycles 20p/mile. You can also claim an additional 5p/mile for each passenger you carry for business.
What if my employer pays less than the HMRC rate?
+
If your employer pays less than the HMRC approved rate you can claim the shortfall as a tax deduction — called Mileage Allowance Relief. This is claimed via self-assessment or by contacting HMRC. You get tax relief on the difference at your marginal rate.
Can I claim mileage as a self-employed person?
+
Yes. Self-employed sole traders can claim HMRC approved mileage rates as a business expense instead of actual fuel and running costs. The rates are the same as for employees. Once you use the flat rate for a vehicle you must continue using it for that vehicle — you cannot switch to actual costs.
Does mileage allowance count as income?
+
Mileage paid at HMRC approved rates is not taxable income. If your employer pays more than the approved rate, the excess is taxable. If less, you can claim relief on the shortfall. Always keep detailed mileage records with dates, destinations and business purpose.
